Testimony from a GCI student living and serving in a Restricted Access Nation in Asia

I come from a family of six children, and I am the fourth child. We live in a province which is 180 km away from the city. This province has great spiritual strongholds because practically every household is steeped in Buddhism, sorcery, fortune-telling, superstition, mediums etc. My siblings and I grew up under such spiritual darkness.

While others have wonderful memories of their teenage years, mine was tormented by illnesses. After finishing my junior studies at the age of 13, I could not continue because of illness. From the age of 13 to 17 yrs old, I was thin and frail. Fatigue prevented me from pursuing my studies or seeking a job. My parents were too poor to send me to the hospital in the province (30 km away from my home) and moreover, the medical facilities in that hospital were inadequate. I would simply approach my neighbor for some medicines, as she worked as a nurse in that hospital. In my province, it is a traditional practice that whenever a person falls sick, he or she simply goes to the Chinese medicine shop for some herbs, or consults the sorcerer for charms or an amulet to wear, or to burn and mix with water for drinking. He or she would also go to the pagoda to pray to Buddha and the gods for healing. My parents did likewise for me during those five years. But all those efforts were in vain.

When I was 17 yrs old, my illnesses worsened. My parents had no choice but to borrow money from our relatives to send me to the hospital in the province. I was diagnosed with Typhoid Fever. I was cured from the fever for a short while but the fever returned. My parents brought me to the sorcerer repeatedly. My illnesses kept on tormenting me and my parents went into great debt. Many times, I thought of committing suicide. Before my parents could resolve my health issues, another issue surfaced. My sister was into sorcery practices, and she was demon possessed at the age of 18 yrs old (she is 2 yrs my junior). She would slash her wrist without any reason. She would wonder around and lose her way, our neighbors would bring her back home. My parents had no choice but to chain her to the bed. Her demonic condition dragged on for four years. As for me, life was meaningless until 2004 when I turned 24. This was what happened…..

During 2003, two church workers from the city visited my province on a regular basis to share the gospel. Despite the long-distance traveling and warnings from the authorities, they were fervent and persistent in their evangelism. In no time, the two church workers came to our family and shared Christ with us. After a few visits, my parents accepted the Lord as they wanted to solve their children’s ordeals. My parents wanted the church workers to help both my sister and me. My sister accepted Jesus when she was in a stable state (her behavior was unpredictable). As for me, I refused to have anything to do with Jesus. Whenever the church workers dropped by our home, they would pray for my sister and cast out the demons. They prayed for me too but my heart was hardened. I would find ways to avoid them whenever they visited us. Once I even burnt the church calendar that they gave to my parents as a New Year gift. I wanted to remain faithful to Buddha and my other gods.

In August 2004, my physical condition affected me mentally and I started screaming and acting in a peculiar manner. I despised my behavior so much that I went to my grandmother’s place and told her that if I died, to bury me in her backyard. That same night while sleeping at my grandmother’s place, I had a dream. In the dream, a man dressed in white appeared to me and said, “I am Jesus; I came to heal you.” After the dream, I was terrified but my heart was still hardened. Three days after my dream, one of the church workers was at my village. My parents requested the church worker to bring me to the hospital in the city for a medical check-up (my parents borrowed money from our relatives again). Both of us traveled 180 km to the hospital in the city by motorbike. After three hours of tests, the medical result was negative. The doctor was unable to diagnose any peculiar illnesses in me. I was relieved to hear that and stayed at the church worker’s home for the night. But during the night, the fever and headaches returned. The church worker shared that my illnesses were not simply physiological or psychological, but rather demonic. The next morning, I followed him to another province 150 km away from the city. My sister was undergoing deliverance in that province and the church worker was called to go there to assist in the deliverance. When I reached that province where my sister was, some church workers prayed and prayed for me ceaselessly while my sister was also undergoing deliverance at another place.

During one of the deliverance sessions, I suddenly felt as though a veil of darkness was lifted up from me. I could sense the years of torment over my illnesses were simply gone. Words could not express my experience. I just knew that I was completely healed. Since then the illnesses have completely left me. As for my sister, she is 90% cured and the church workers are still helping her.

After I was healed, I became a ‘new’ man. I was no longer reserved and inferior. I kept on rejoicing and praising the Lord who healed my years of illnesses and demonic oppression. I regretted not opening my heart to Jesus much earlier. As I am still a new Christian (accepted Christ for barely two years), I still have a lot to learn about God and to grow in His Word. So the church workers sent me to the city for GCI training. I want to thank GCI for the training I have received. I have learned a lot, especially on Spiritual Leadership. When I was in GCI Level 2, I was already reaching out to people in my province, especially those who were facing demonic attacks. Together with another coworker, we have witnessed to over 100 people and 80 of them have accepted Jesus into their lives. I am now leading this group. The church workers from the city come regularly to guide me in the ministry in my province. I will be graduating from GCI training in April 2006. I know that I still have a long way to go in the area of leadership and ministry but I will not lose heart. I look forward to serving God in a greater measure. I have committed my life to serve God and Him alone…

Galatians 2:20, “I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.”

Thank you….
